The moment I exited the jetway and turned around to see the Bridger mountains rising above the valley, I felt it again. As always. I was home.

About

Turner Houston

Turner Houston

A woman with a deep curiosity about everything on earth--really, everything: how paper is made, what life is like for honeybees inside their hive, where wind comes from, how people choose what they do in their lifetimes--everything. Creativity is central to who I am: photography, writing, cooking, pottery, soap-making and, yes--knitting (but weird knitting, not "your mother's knitting.") So it makes sense that I should try to understand the magic of creativity and why it confers such gifts to those who make things...

The Newseum
555 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Washington, DC
The mission of the Newseum is to increase public understanding of the importance of a free press and the First Amendment. And it is needed more than ever now that journalism and a free press are under attack. Unfortunately, like a lot of newspapers, the Newseum will be closing permanently on Dec. 31, 2019. GO NOW.

Books:
Our House, by Louise Candlish
It’s summer and the weather has been insanely hot, with high humidity as a chaser. In this stultifying atmosphere, one is easily pardoned for reading a thriller that perhaps is not “literary.” It sure kept me glued to the pages as I tried to figure out how a woman comes home and finds everything of hers gone, a new family moving in, her children missing, and her ex-husband can’t be reached by phone.

Craftiest Project of the Month:
Little Hearts,
by Teresa Fox
Still under the oppressive blanket of heat, I suggest knitting up a small heart that can be felted, or stuffed as is, and used as a lavender sachet, or heck, as a Christmas ornament. Bust your stash and knit up a bunch. In these days of divisiveness, nothing could be sweeter than giving your heart(s) to people.

Tasty + Good Recipes:
Succotash of Fresh Corn, Lima Beans, Tomatoes and Onions Continuing the summer-theme here, I’d like to point out that there’s a lot of great produce coming in these days. Grab up some and make this delicious succotash. (This recipe does not use bacon. Let’s leave animals alone.)

Thai Iced Tea
Need a pick-me-up after being outside? Try making up some Thai iced tea, spiced, and swirled with condensed milk.  A sure fire thirst quencher!
