Teaching and Sharing Knitting

“Look! I finished it,” says Emelie sitting up in bed, holding up her first knit baby hat for the baby she’s carrying. She’s beaming, her face alight with wonder, pride and happiness. “I’m going to teach everyone at my church to knit!” Continue reading “Teaching and Sharing Knitting” →

About

Turner Houston

Turner Houston

A woman with a deep curiosity about everything on earth--really, everything: how paper is made, what life is like for honeybees inside their hive, where wind comes from, how people choose what they do in their lifetimes--everything. Creativity is central to who I am: photography, writing, cooking, pottery, soap-making and, yes--knitting (but weird knitting, not "your mother's knitting.") Galleries:
OK, there is a pandemic affecting all of us. One of my ways to find inspiration has always been going to see art. But all the galleries are closed! Next best thing to inspire you? Virtual gallery tours! Here are links to two of my favorites:

Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum shows off some of its masterpieces in a virtual tour with close, close-ups and narration (if you want it). You can experience Rembrandt’s “The Nightwatch” in ways you’ve never imagined.

The Natural History Museum in London has a terrific collection of rocks, botany, butterflies, dinosaur skeletons and other natural wonders. It also has Sir David Attenborough narrating deeper information about the treasures.

Craftiest Project of the Month:
Can you sew? You can make a face mask to wear when you go out into the world. Make some for yourself, and your peeps. You don’t HAVE to use a machine. Kaiser Permanente has a video tutorial with step-by-step instructions for making non-clinical cloth masks at home.

As well as the written instructions, here.

Tasty + Good Recipes:
What is it about chocolate fudge—especially fudge from See’s Candy? It’s very chocolate-y, nice and “grainy,” and you can’t stop eating it. So, since we are stuck in Purgatory for a while, why not make up a batch of an imitation from KeyIngredient, and eat it all yourself?
